In a groundbreaking achievement, Academia Sinica, in collaboration with various research institutions, has successfully unveiled a self-built quantum computer based on 5-qubit chips. This accomplishment comes ahead of the ambitious schedule set by the Taiwanese government earlier this year.
The quantum computer, boasting an impressive 99.9 percent fidelity rate, is now accessible to Academia Sinica's members and partners for research purposes. It serves as a vital test and development platform for quantum computing, ultra-low temperature CMOS, and operational amplifier research projects.
Collaborating with institutions such as the Industrial Technology Research Institute, National Changhua Normal University, and others, Academia Sinica's quantum computer marks a significant advancement in the nation's research and development in quantum computing. The project was completed in October, and its recent connection to the internet in January 2024 signifies a crucial milestone.
Chen Chii-dong, a research fellow at Academia Sinica, highlighted the significance of the quantum computer's launch, stating that it follows the successful creation of the chip in October of the previous year. This achievement reflects the institution's commitment to advancing quantum research.
Surpassing expectations, the project was completed ahead of schedule, with a 5-qubit machine finalized four months earlier than the initially projected deadline. The National Science and Technology Council's plan to develop a domestically-produced quantum computer by 2027 received a major boost with this early success.
James Liao, president of Academia Sinica, emphasized the importance of patient problem-solving in technological research and development. He expressed hope that Academia Sinica's achievement will propel the development of quantum research and related industries in Taiwan. Additionally, Liao aims to attract both domestic and foreign talents to contribute to the field of quantum technology, positioning Taiwan as a key player in this cutting-edge domain.
