In the dynamic world of smartphone sales, a significant shift occurred in 2023 as Apple dethroned Samsung, marking the first time since 2010 that Samsung was not the leading brand. According to IDC's report, Apple secured its dominance by shipping 234.6 million smartphones, claiming a 20.1% market share. In contrast, Samsung trailed with 226.6 million shipments and a 19.4% share.
Following the top two contenders, Xiaomi, with 145.9 million units shipped, secured a 12.5% market share, positioning itself in third place. Oppo and Transsion followed suit, with 103.1 million and 94.9 million shipments, holding 8.8% and 8.1% of the market, respectively.
The growth patterns reveal Apple's steady rise, with a 3.7% increase in shipments compared to 2022. On the contrary, Samsung experienced a significant decline of 13.6%. Notably, Transsion, the company behind Tecno and Infinix, exhibited remarkable growth with a staggering 30.8% increase in shipments.
Zooming in on the final quarter of 2023, Apple continued its dominance with 80.5 million shipments and a 24.7% market share. Samsung secured the second position with 53 million units, constituting a 16.3% share. Xiaomi maintained its momentum with 40.7 million units, holding a 12.5% market share.
Interestingly, Transsion emerged as the fourth-largest player in this quarter, shipping 28.2 million units and capturing an 8.6% market share. Vivo rounded up the top five with 24.1 million shipments and a 7.5% market share.
Despite the ups and downs in individual performances, the overall smartphone market demonstrated resilience by growing 8.5% in the last quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This shift in leadership and market dynamics signals an intriguing chapter in the ongoing competition among smartphone giants.
